Rivers lawmakers end feud with Gov. Fubara, withdraw impeachment notice

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have officially retracted the impeachment notice served to Governor Siminalayi Fubara in a crucial decision made during a session held in Port Harcourt.
The move comes after a truce was successfully mediated during a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and conflicting parties at the Aso Villa in Abuja on Monday.
The conflict between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who now serves as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had resulted in a schism among lawmakers in the House. Notably, 27 members defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) amid the ongoing feud.

The feud witnessed a series of dramatic events, including parallel sittings, the revelation of an impeachment plot against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a wave of resignations within Fubara’s cabinet, particularly among pro-Wike commissioners.
The withdrawal of the impeachment notice signifies a notable step towards resolving the internal conflicts within the Rivers State political landscape.
The lawmakers communicated their resolution to withdraw the impeachment notice through an official notice read on the house floor, citing respect for the President as the primary reason for their decision.
