Rivers assembly initiates impeachment process against governor Fubara

The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, escalating the political crisis in the state.

Lawmakers on Monday formally presented a notice of allegations against the governor during plenary, accusing him of misconduct and actions said to be in violation of the 1999 Constitution. The notice, signed by a majority of the lawmakers, marks the first constitutional step toward the possible removal of the governor from office.

Following the presentation of the notice, the Assembly directed the Clerk to serve the allegations on Governor Fubara, who is expected to respond to the claims within the time stipulated by law.

The move comes amid a prolonged power struggle between the governor and lawmakers loyal to his predecessor and former political ally, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The rift has led to repeated confrontations between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.

Governor Fubara has consistently denied wrongdoing, describing the actions against him as politically motivated. He has also urged residents of the state to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation unfolds.

If the process continues, the Assembly may resolve to set up a seven-man investigative panel to probe the allegations, in line with constitutional provisions.
