Russia jails singer for criticising Ukraine offensive

A Russian court has sentenced 26-year-old singer Eduard Sharlot to five and a half years in prison for publicly opposing Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine, marking another case in Russia’s harsh crackdown on dissent since the war began in February 2022.

Sharlot was found guilty of “publicly insulting” the religious beliefs of Orthodox Christians and “rehabilitating Naziism.” The charges stemmed from videos he shared online, which authorities deemed controversial.

In one of the videos, released in June 2023, Sharlot burned his Russian passport in a dramatic protest against the war in Ukraine. Another video showed him nailing a photograph of Patriarch Kirill—the head of the Russian Orthodox Church and a staunch supporter of the military campaign—to a crucifix.

Sharlot had fled to Armenia shortly after Russia launched its offensive but attempted to return to the country in November 2023. He was arrested upon arrival at the Saint Petersburg airport.

Since the start of the Ukraine invasion, Russia has introduced stricter laws to suppress domestic dissent, targeting critics of its actions in Ukraine. The government has imprisoned or exiled nearly all prominent Kremlin opponents, creating an atmosphere of fear and repression for dissenters.

Moscow has also ramped up its efforts to punish those who criticise its religious and political institutions. Patriarch Kirill has been a vocal advocate of the invasion, describing it as a spiritual battle aligned with Russian Orthodox values.

The crackdown on dissent reflects a broader strategy to stifle public opposition to the war. Critics argue it is indicative of shrinking freedoms and human rights in Russia, as authorities increasingly target individuals who dare to question state narratives.
