Sacked PDP National Secretary may face imprisonment
An Enugu High Court Division has issued a final warning to Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the sacked National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ordering him to stop presenting himself as the party’s scribe. If Anyanwu disregards this directive, he could face contempt of court charges and potential imprisonment.
The ruling came from Judge C.O. Ajah and follows a legal case filed by Emmanuel Aniagu, with the PDP, Acting National Chairman Iliya Umar Damagun, Anyanwu, and the PDP National Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Ali Odefa, as defendants. The court’s decision is a direct response to Anyanwu’s continued representation of himself as the PDP National Secretary, despite being removed from office.
The court’s judgement details Anyanwu’s substantial role within the party, including his responsibility for drawing up lists of committee members for gubernatorial elections and signing letters of appointment for various party panels. It also pointed out that Anyanwu’s election as the gubernatorial candidate for Imo State in the 2023 election, while still holding the position of National Secretary, created a conflict of interest, essentially making him a “judge in his own cause.”

As part of the ruling, the court has ordered the PDP to recognize Hon. S. K. E. Udeh Okoye, the individual recommended by the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee of the PDP, as the new National Secretary. Okoye will serve out the remainder of the term for which Anyanwu was originally elected. The PDP’s leadership, including the Acting National Chairman, has been instructed to comply with this decision in all situations, including the swearing-in process.
Failure to adhere to this order will see Anyanwu face legal consequences, potentially leading to prison time. The ruling marks a significant chapter in the PDP’s internal disputes and underlines the importance of compliance with judicial orders within the party’s hierarchy.
