Saif al-Islam Gaddafi assassinated in Libya, sparking shock, family calls for probe
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the 53-year-old son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in his home in Zintan, Libya, local media and family sources said on Tuesday, prompting widespread dismay and demands for an investigation into the circumstances of his death. 
According to statements from his lawyer and political adviser shared on social media, armed men entered Gaddafi’s residence in the western Libyan town southwest of Tripoli and fatally shot him. His political team described the attack as a “cowardly and treacherous assassination,” saying the assailants disabled security cameras before the assault.

Libya’s Attorney General has launched a formal investigation, with forensic experts examining the scene and interviewing witnesses as authorities work to identify those responsible. 
Saif al-Islam, once seen as a leading figure in Libya and at times viewed as his father’s potential successor, played a central role in national politics before and after the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. Though he never held formal office after the fall of the former regime, he remained a controversial figure, having been captured in 2011, sentenced to death in absentia in 2015 and later released under an amnesty in 2017.

In 2021, he re-emerged to pursue a bid for the presidency, a move that sparked significant debate across the fractured political landscape of Libya before the election process stalled. 
His assassination adds a dramatic twist to Libya’s ongoing political instability, raising questions about security, justice, and future power dynamics in the North African country.
