SDP expels el-Rufai, imposes 30-year ban on party activities

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai from the party and banned him from associating with it for 30 years.

According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, El-Rufai falsely claimed membership, manipulated internal processes, and attempted to destabilise the party.

The SDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) made the decision after thorough investigations revealed that El-Rufai didn’t register with the party at his ward level as required by the party’s constitution.

Instead, he allegedly forged documents and self-registered, claiming to be “number 001” in the SDP membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward.

The party accused El-Rufai of gross indiscipline, misinformation, inducement, and manipulation, which allegedly fueled internal divisions and threatened the party’s unity and ideological integrity.

The SDP also claimed El-Rufai aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and attempted to draw the SDP into an unapproved coalition.

The NWC’s decision includes: Expulsion from the party, 30-year ban from applying for membership, identifying with the party’s name, logo, or participating in any party activities, notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and relevant institutions of El-Rufai’s non-member status.

The SDP reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, national patriotism, and principled opposition, urging Nigerians to join the party through lawful and transparent means.
