Shettima to represent Tinubu at CHOGM 2024 in Samoa

Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to represent President Bola Tinubu at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which will be held from October 21 to 26 in Apia, Samoa. The summit will bring together world leaders, including King Charles of England, from 56 member countries of the Commonwealth.

This year’s CHOGM will focus on the theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth.” The discussions will revolve around how member countries can harness their strengths through resilience, unlock potential, leverage the Commonwealth Advantage, and foster a more connected, digital future for the Commonwealth. These themes aim to address global challenges such as economic uncertainty, environmental crises, and security issues.

A statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, confirmed Shettima’s role at the summit. He is expected to use this high-level platform to further attract investment opportunities to Nigeria. Through the Commonwealth Business Forum, which will run alongside the main summit, Shettima will engage global business leaders to champion solutions to pressing global challenges, particularly in the areas of trade, innovation, and economic growth.

“The Vice President will also participate in the People’s Forum, the single largest platform organized by the Commonwealth Foundation, which allows people to engage directly with their leaders on important development issues,” the statement read.

This year’s CHOGM is significant, as Nigeria and other Commonwealth member states will elect a new Commonwealth Secretary-General. Following the principles of regional rotation, the next Secretary-General will be from the Africa Region. The candidates for this role are from Lesotho, Ghana, and The Gambia. Nigeria, as the largest African Commonwealth member, is expected to play a key role in this election process.

Vice President Shettima will also take part in deliberations aimed at addressing pressing global economic and environmental issues, with the goal of strengthening cooperation among Commonwealth nations. These discussions are crucial to building resilience within the Commonwealth and ensuring a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future, particularly for the Commonwealth’s 1.5 billion youth population.
