A camel is an even-toed ungulate in the genus Camelus that bears distinctive fatty deposits known as “humps” on its back.

Camels are remarkable animals best known for their ability to survive in some of the harshest environments on Earth, especially deserts.

Camels can withstand changes in body temperature and water consumption that would kill most other mammals.

Often called the “ships of the desert,” camels have been essential to human life for thousands of years, providing transportation, food, and companionship in arid regions of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

There are three surviving species of camel. The one-humped dromedary makes up 94% of the world’s camel population, and the two-humped Bactrian camel makes up 6%.

The average life expectancy of a camel is 40 to 50 years.

The wild Bactrian camel is a distinct species that is not ancestral to the domestic Bactrian camel, and is now critically endangered, with fewer than 1,000 individuals.

Camel humps do not store water, as many people believe; instead, they store fat, which camels can convert into energy when food is scarce.

This adaptation allows them to travel long distances without eating.
Camels are well adapted to extreme heat and dry conditions. Their long eyelashes and closable nostrils protect them from sandstorms, while their thick lips allow them to eat thorny desert plants that other animals avoid. Their wide, padded feet help them walk easily on soft sand without sinking.

In many cultures, camels play a vital economic and cultural role. They are used for carrying goods, farming, racing, and even tourism.

Camel milk is highly nutritious and valued for its health benefits, while camel meat is an important source of protein in some communities.

Beyond their physical strength, camels are known for their calm and patient nature, although they can be stubborn when mistreated. Overall, camels are symbols of endurance and resilience, perfectly suited to life in challenging environments.
