Sokoto government debunks report claiming governor accompanied Otti to visit Kanu in prison

The Sokoto State Government has dismissed reports alleging that Governor Ahmed Aliyu accompanied Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to visit detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Custodial Centre.
In a statement released by the governor’s spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, the government described the report as “false, misleading and mischievous,” insisting that Governor Aliyu was not in the country at the time of the visit. According to the statement, the governor was in Saudi Arabia performing the Lesser Hajj when Governor Otti visited.
Bawa clarified that while Sokoto traditionally welcomes visiting state executives, Governor Otti was received only by commissioners and special advisers who represented the state government during his courtesy visit. They later accompanied him to the Government House before he proceeded to the custodial centre.

“For the avoidance of doubt, His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Aliyu, did not accompany or participate in any visit to Nnamdi Kanu. Any report suggesting otherwise is entirely unfounded,” the statement read.
The government urged the public to disregard the viral claims and warned against the spread of misinformation capable of creating unnecessary political tensions.
The clarification follows widespread reactions after earlier media reports suggested that both governors jointly visited Kanu, a claim the Sokoto government has now firmly rejected.
