DSS transfers Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Correctional Centre

Story by Susan Mbamah

The Department of State Services (DSS) has transferred the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Sokoto.

The move follows Thursday’s judgment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, who ruled that the DSS was permitted to keep Kanu in any custodial facility within the country.

Kanu’s legal adviser, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development on Friday, stating that the IPOB leader had been moved “far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones and well-wishers.”

A security source also confirmed the transfer to Daily Trust, though declined to comment further.

Justice Omotosho had convicted and sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on a seven-count charge related to terrorism. The court upheld the DSS’ claims that Kanu used acts of terrorism in advocating the secession of the South-East, South-South, and parts of Benue and Kogi from Nigeria.

During sentencing, prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) urged the court to apply the maximum penalty, death, as prescribed in three of the charges, arguing that the court had no discretion on those counts. He also asked the court to order the shutdown of Kanu’s digital devices and online accounts.

Awomolo further requested that Kanu be held in the safest possible facility in Nigeria to prevent any interference, including potential attempts on his life by allies or adversaries.
