San Luis Obispo County Sheriff, Ian Parkinson has announced on Tuesday, that one Paul Flores has been arrested on a murder charge of a college student Kristin Smart, who disappeared in 1996.
Ian Parkinson disclosed this at a news conference, saying the suspect, Paul Flores, 44, has been charged with one count of murder in connection with Miss Smart’s disappearance.
He stated that Paul Flores was with Miss Smart the night she disappeared 25 years ago, that he was arrested in San Pedro in Los Angeles County and transported to San Luis Obispo County, California.
The victim, Kristin Smart, was a 19-year-old student at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, visited her friend, the suspect, on her way back from a party, and never returned, and was declared dead in 2002.
Meanwhile, Paul Flores’ father, Ruben Flores, 80, was also arrested for being an accessory to murder but was later set Bail at $250,000.
Representing Paul Flores, Sarah Sanger, and Ruben Flores, Harold Mesick, declined to comment about the pending cases.
Paul Flores became a person of interest in the case and was renewed “Your Own Backyard,” by the crime podcast.
Sheriff Parkinson said, “Throughout our investigation, Paul Flores has remained a person of significant interest, as the case progressed he became a suspect and the prime suspect in the case.”
“As a result of this evidence, a San Luis Obispo Superior Court judge signed two arrest warrants and two additional search warrants.
“We have not yet recovered Kristin body, but we are not going to stop until Kristin is recovered, Parkinson said.”
Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong, speaking after Parkinson said, “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Denise and Dan Smart, all of Kristin’s friends and family as this process proceeds.”
