Spain rejects claims of involvement in Venezuela destabilisation plot
Spain has firmly denied accusations by Venezuela that it played a role in a plot to destabilise the government of President Nicolas Maduro. A source from the Spanish foreign ministry stated on Sunday that “Spain denies and categorically rejects any insinuation that it is involved in a political destabilisation operation in Venezuela.”
This statement follows the arrest of three Americans, two Spaniards, and a Czech national in Venezuela, with authorities accusing them of conspiring against the Maduro government. Venezuela’s Interior Minister, Diosdado Cabello, announced the arrests on Saturday, linking the detainees to alleged plans to attack Maduro and his administration. He also claimed that the plot had connections to intelligence agencies in the United States and Spain, as well as opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
However, the Spanish government clarified that the detained Spaniards, Andres Martinez Adasme and Jose Maria Basoa, were not affiliated with the Spanish intelligence service, CNI, or any other state body. “Spain defends a democratic and peaceful solution to the situation in Venezuela,” the foreign ministry source added.

A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department also rejected claims of any U.S. involvement in the alleged plot, calling such accusations “categorically false.”
The incident comes amid increasing tensions between Venezuela, Spain, and the U.S., particularly following Venezuela’s disputed July 28 presidential election. Maduro claims to have won the election, but the opposition accuses him of stealing the vote, alleging a lack of transparency as Maduro failed to release full voting details.
Adding to the strain, Venezuela recently recalled its ambassador to Madrid for consultations after Spanish officials criticised Maduro’s government. Tensions were further heightened when Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who had faced threats of arrest, sought exile in Spain.
As the situation develops, both Spain and the U.S. maintain that they are not involved in any efforts to destabilise Venezuela, instead calling for peaceful and democratic resolutions to the country’s ongoing political challenges.
