Super Eagles beat Tanzania in first AFCON game
The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars in their opening Group C fixture.
Nigeria dominated early proceedings and were rewarded in the first half when centre-back Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home the opening goal, giving the Super Eagles a deserved lead. The goal settled the team and boosted confidence as they controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the game.

Tanzania pushed for an equaliser after the break, but Nigeria’s defence remained disciplined, with the goalkeeper and backline standing firm to preserve the advantage. The Super Eagles also created several chances in the second half but were unable to add to their tally.
The win hands Nigeria an early advantage in Group C and puts Eric Chelle’s men in a strong position as the tournament progresses. Attention now shifts to their next group encounter against Tunisia on Saturday, December 27, where the Super Eagles will be aiming to secure another positive result and move closer to qualification for the knockout stages
