Supreme Court reserves judgment in Atiku’s presidential election appeal

The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in the appeal made by Atiku Abubakar and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the Presidential Election Petition Court’s (PEPC) decision, which affirmed the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the presidential election.

On Monday, a seven-member panel of the court led by Justice Inyang Okoro announced this after the counsels to the parties adopted their briefs of argument and made final submissions.

Additionally, the court listened to arguments from lawyers to parties on Atiku’s filed motion requesting to supply fresh evidence on forged documents.

Mr Chris Uche, Atiku Abubakar’s lawyer, pleaded with the court to grant the motion, allowing their appeal, granting the sought prayers, and disqualifying Tinubu.

However, the counsel to the respondents, Abubakar Mahmoud for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Wole Olanipekun for President Tinubu, and Akin Olujinmi for the All Progressives Congress (APC), urged the court to dismiss the motion and appeal for lacking merit.

Regarding the appeal made by the Allied People’s Movement (APM), the party was requested to withdraw its appeal as it did not have any petitions for determination.

Consequently, Machukwu Umeh, counsel for the APM, withdrew the appeal, and the respondents did not object to it. The apex court then dismissed the appeal.
