Teen gets community service after jail term reviewed for birthday drink theft
An 18-year-old boy, Aminu Abdulazeez, has confessed to stealing crates of Nutri Milk and Dudu mineral drinks in Bazza, Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State, in a bid to celebrate his birthday with friends.
Aminu’s plan failed after he was traced and apprehended. He was subsequently arraigned before Area Court I in Bazza, where he was convicted and sentenced to three months in prison, with an option of a ₦40,000 fine. Unable to pay the fine, he was transferred to the Mubi Correctional Centre.
During a routine review by the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee—responsible for evaluating cases of detainees awaiting reconsideration—Aminu restated his involvement in the offence.

The committee, chaired by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, reassessed the case and approved a non-custodial punishment. The panel reduced his penalty to three months of community service.
Under the revised sentence, Abdulazeez is required to return to Bazza to sweep public places, a health centre, or a police station over the course of three months instead of serving time in prison.
The case has stirred public debate about the appropriateness of the initial punishment for petty theft involving a teenager preparing for a birthday celebration.
