Police open fire as protesting students allegedly attack deputy governor’s convoy
Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, Ogun State, reportedly attacked the convoy of the state’s Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, during a protest on Wednesday.
The deputy governor was en route to the 35 Artillery Brigade Alabama, Abeokuta, to represent Governor Dapo Abiodun at the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day reception when the incident occurred.
Eyewitnesses stated that some vehicles in Salako-Oyedele’s convoy were damaged, and several security personnel sustained injuries while attempting to restore order.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, described the students as “irate” and armed with sticks and other projectiles.
“Immediately the students realised it was the deputy governor, they became even more restive and rushed to attack her convoy with the intention of demobilising it, despite her security operatives as well as other police officers’ persuasion to stay calm and allow the convoy to pass,” Akinmade said.
He added that Salako-Oyedele was forced to retreat to her lodge, allowing the protesters to continue before resuming her journey.
Reacting to the claims, Adeyanju Francis, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun JCC, denied that students attacked the convoy.
“None of our students attacked her; we were coming peacefully. We converged this morning at MAPOLY to express our grievances to the Ogun State government, and on our way to Oke-Mosan, we were accosted by the deputy governor’s entourage,” Francis said.
He alleged that the police attached to the convoy fired gunshots at the students first, which escalated the situation.
“We even took three of the bullets they shot at us at OPIC on our way to Iwe Iroyin,” Francis added, insisting that the students were unarmed and accusing the deputy governor’s security team of injuring some protesters.
The incident has sparked outrage among students and heightened tensions between the Ogun State government and the protesting academic community.
