The Unsung Hero: Remarkable journey of Prince Nico Mbarga

Some stories shine brightly, while others remain hidden in the shadows, waiting to be unearthed and celebrated. The tale of Prince Nico Mbarga, a musical prodigy whose legacy transcends borders, is one such hidden gem that deserves to be brought into the spotlight.

Born to a Cameroonian father and a Nigerian mother in the vibrant town of Ikom, present-day Cross River State, Nico Mbarga’s journey to musical stardom was anything but conventional. Raised amidst humble beginnings, young Nico developed a passion for music at an early age, fueled by the melodies of highlife legends like Bobby Benson’s “Taxi Driver.”

Tragedy struck when Nico lost his father at a tender age, leaving his mother, a peasant farmer, to shoulder the responsibility of providing for the family. Undeterred by adversity, Nico embarked on a quest to pursue his musical dreams, performing in bars and honing his craft as a singer.

The outbreak of the Nigerian-Biafran War in 1967 forced Nico to flee to Mamfe, Cameroon, where he encountered Lucy, the love of his life. Despite their impoverished circumstances, Nico and Lucy forged ahead, eventually making their way back to Nigeria and settling in the bustling town of Onitsha.

It was in Onitsha that Nico’s fortunes took a remarkable turn. Surrounded by the vibrant energy of the city, Nico established his own band, Rocafil Jazz, captivating audiences with his unique blend of highlife music. His soulful voice and infectious rhythms made him a beloved figure in the community, earning him the title of “Prince” among his admirers.

But Nico’s true moment of triumph came with the release of his iconic hit single, “Sweet Mother.” A heartfelt tribute to maternal love, the song struck a chord with listeners across Africa and beyond, catapulting Nico to international fame. With over 13 million copies sold worldwide, “Sweet Mother” remains one of the best-selling singles of all time, cementing Nico’s place in music history.
