TikTok blocks over 49,000 live sessions amid surge in explicit broadcasts

TikTok has released new enforcement data revealing a major crackdown on Live sessions that violated its monetization and safety guidelines, particularly those involving sexual activity. The figures were disclosed during the platform’s West Africa Safety Summit held in Dakar, Senegal, in collaboration with AfricTivistes.
According to TikTok, more than 2.3 million Live sessions and over 1 million creators faced actions such as warnings and demonetization in the second quarter of 2025 for violating Live Monetization policies.
During the same period, 49,512 Live sessions were blocked in Nigeria for breaching these rules.

The Dakar Summit gathered government representatives, regulatory agencies, civil society groups, media professionals, and technology stakeholders from across West Africa, including Senegal, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Ethiopia. Discussions centered on strengthening content moderation, ensuring user protection, and addressing emerging regional online safety concerns.
The event highlighted TikTok’s expansion of its #SaferTogether initiative, which focuses on coordinated safety efforts across Sub-Saharan Africa. Participants examined digital threats, shared insights, and explored collaborative strategies to enhance user safety.
TikTok’s Outreach and Partnerships Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, Duduzile Mkhize, reaffirmed the platform’s commitment to local engagement and improved moderation systems. She stressed that effective digital safety requires strong cooperation with policymakers and regional partners.

She noted that shared efforts can help create a more secure online environment where users can create, connect, and explore content responsibly.
One of the contributors at the Summit, Dr. Akinola Olojo—an expert in preventing and countering violent extremism and a member of TikTok’s Sub-Saharan Africa Safety Advisory Council—emphasized the importance of proactive safety systems. He stated that collaborative action remains essential for reducing radicalization risks and promoting positive online engagement.
Globally, TikTok removed over 189 million videos in the second quarter of 2025, representing about 0.7% of total uploads. Of these removals, 99.1% were detected proactively, mostly through AI-powered moderation, and 94.4% were deleted within 24 hours.

The platform also shut down nearly 77 million fake accounts, alongside over 25 million accounts suspected of belonging to underage users.
Within Nigeria, TikTok removed more than 3.7 million videos between April and June 2025 for Community Guidelines violations, with 98.7% taken down before they were viewed.
The newly released enforcement figures underscore TikTok’s ongoing efforts to strengthen digital safety and curb policy violations across its global community.
