Tinubu approves Abuja Federal Polytechnic, names it after himself

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa, one of the largest estates in Nigeria’s capital city. The new institution will bear the name of the President.

A letter dated January 16, 2025, addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, confirmed the approval.

The initiative is in line with the government’s goal to promote technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial training as part of the national education policy.

In the letter, Dr. Alausa requested the FCT Minister to propose suitable locations in Gwarinpa for both the temporary and permanent campuses of the new polytechnic.

He further stated that a technical team from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) would visit the recommended sites for inspection. The final approval will be based on the team’s reports.

In response, the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, praised President Tinubu for approving the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic in Gwarinpa. Maikalangu expressed his gratitude to the FCT Minister for his pivotal role in making the project a reality for the residents of the FCT.

He described the establishment of the polytechnic as a dream come true, which would contribute significantly to the development of the FCT. Maikalangu also noted the historic appointment of Zaphaniah Bitrus Jisalo, an FCT native, as a two-term member of the House of Representatives representing the AMAC/Bwari Constituency, and later as a minister.
