Tinubu grants three-year extension to IGP, waives retirement age

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a three-year extension of the tenure of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, despite his impending retirement age of 60, which he will reach tomorrow, September 4, 2024.

Sources from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation confirmed that the extension was granted on Monday. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, presented Egbetokun with a letter confirming the extension of his tenure.

“The IGP received his letter of tenure extension from Akume on Monday morning,” a senior security officer at the SGF Office confirmed.

This move comes after the Senate passed a bill amending the Police Act 2020, which introduced a new clause allowing police officers to serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, would have been due for retirement tomorrow.
