Tinubu meets sultan of Sokoto in ongoing consultations for national unity

Story by Okafor Vivian

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday held a closed-door meeting with the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, at the State House, Abuja.

The meeting comes just days after the President’s engagement with the Archbishop of Abuja, Bishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama, as part of a series of high-level consultations with religious and traditional leaders across the country.

In a post on X, the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, said the discussions were aimed at promoting dialogue, fostering mutual understanding, and strengthening social trust among Nigeria’s diverse communities.

Presidency sources also confirmed that the consultations are part of Tinubu’s broader efforts to engage moral and cultural figures on strategies to consolidate peace, deepen national integration, and address emerging social and security challenges.

Officials noted that the meetings align with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes inclusivity, interfaith harmony, and unity as key pillars for national stability.

The engagements follow renewed global attention on Nigeria’s religious landscape after U.S. President Donald Trump, on October 31, 2025, redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing alleged widespread religious persecution and violence.

While the U.S. report claimed over 7,000 Christians were killed in the first seven months of 2025 in attacks by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed herders, the Federal Government has strongly rejected the claims, insisting that Nigeria remains committed to protecting religious freedom and maintaining interfaith coexistence under its constitution.
