Tinubu orders security crackdown on illegal miners
President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to crack down on illegal mining activities across Nigeria. The President issued this directive while receiving a presentation from participants of Course 32 of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja on Thursday.
The presentation, titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035,” outlined strategies for leveraging the mining sector to boost national security and development.
Responding to the presentation delivered by Colonel Olajide Bello, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy through sustainable mining practices. He commended the participants for their thorough research and expressed the need to eliminate illegal mining operations that exploit the country’s resources and destabilize the economy.
“I have listened carefully to your presentation on the theme. Aside from your knowledge of war and security, I could see the intellectual depth of the work done to help the nation, and I must say thank you to all of you,” President Tinubu said. “We have challenges of scavengers and exploiters around the country. We must nip that in the bud, and you military officers understand this better than the civil society.”
The President also stressed that his administration would ensure that companies involved in mineral exploration prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and the communities hosting these operations. He highlighted the need for the establishment of medical centres and other facilities in mining areas to protect the lives and property of residents.

Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of the National Defence College, provided an overview of the institution’s achievements since its inception in 1992, noting that it has graduated 2,871 participants, including international participants from 30 African countries as well as countries in Asia, Europe, and South America. He thanked the President for his support in upgrading the college’s infrastructure and appealed for assistance in completing the college’s permanent site in Abuja.
The President assured the delegation that his administration would prioritise the completion of the NDC headquarters in Abuja and continue to support efforts to bolster national security and economic stability through strategic initiatives such as those presented by the NDC participants.
