Tinubu sympathises with Anthony Joshua over fatal road accident
President Bola Tinubu has expressed heartfelt sympathy to world boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that left two people dead and the boxer injured.
In a message posted on X on Monday, the President described the incident as a painful tragedy, offering prayers for the repose of the deceased and a swift recovery for Joshua.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said. “This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season.”
The President said he shared in the grief of Joshua and his family as they grapple with the emotional toll of the incident, noting that the boxer’s character and service to the nation remain admirable even in moments of distress.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have consistently shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country—qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” Tinubu stated.
Calling for unity and compassion, the President urged Nigerians to support one another during difficult times. “In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” he added.
Tinubu concluded by praying for strength and healing for Joshua, as well as eternal rest for the victims of the crash.
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Joshua was involved in the accident on Monday at Makun, Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. when a Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly collided with a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
A witness, Adeniyi Orojo, said Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy comprising a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” Orojo said.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were said to have arrived shortly after the crash, as investigations into the cause of the accident commenced.
