Tinubu to attend Mahama’s inauguration as Ghana’s President

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja on January 6, 2025, to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, scheduled for January 7 in Accra.

This was disclosed in a statement by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.

John Mahama, who served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2017, was reelected in December 2024, succeeding President Nana Akufo-Addo. The invitation to Tinubu reflects the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana, as well as the personal relationship between the two leaders.

As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu will join other African leaders in witnessing the historic event. He will be accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior officials.

Onanuga stated, “Tinubu’s trip to Accra underscores the commitment of Nigeria and Ghana to regional cooperation and the deepening of diplomatic ties within ECOWAS.”

Mahama’s return to power highlights the resilience of democracy in Ghana, a nation often regarded as a beacon of stability in West Africa.

Leaders from across the continent are expected to converge in Accra to celebrate the peaceful transfer of power.
