Thousands attend funeral of slain son of Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi

Thousands of Libyans gathered on Thursday in the western town of Bani Walid for the funeral of Saif al-Arab Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, whose killing has stirred renewed debate over Libya’s unresolved divisions, according to media reports .

Mourners poured into the town, a long-time stronghold of loyalty to the Gaddafi family, carrying portraits of the late leader and waving the former regime’s green flags. The large turnout highlighted the enduring support the Gaddafi name still commands among sections of Libya’s population more than a decade after the 2011 uprising .

Saif al-Arab Gaddafi was reportedly killed earlier this week in a shooting incident, though authorities have yet to release full details about the circumstances surrounding his death. Libyan officials say an investigation has been opened, but no arrests or claims of responsibility have been announced so far .

The funeral came amid continuing political instability in Libya, which remains divided between rival administrations and armed groups. Analysts say the killing and the show of support at the burial underscores how unresolved grievances from the post-Gaddafi era continue to shape the country’s fragile security and political landscape .
