Tragedy in Anambra: Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo shot dead

Rev. Fr. Tobias Okonkwo, a Catholic priest from the Diocese of Nnewi, was tragically shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in Anambra State on Thursday, December 26, 2024.

The incident occurred along the Ihiala section of the Onitsha-Owerri Road. The Diocese’s Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement released on Friday, December 27, 2024.

“The Catholic priest was shot on Thursday evening by unknown assailants,” the statement read.

Rev. Fr. Okonkwo, aged 40, hailed from the Ekwulumili community in Nnewi South Local Government Area. At the time of his death, he served as the Manager of the Nursing, Midwifery, and Medical Laboratory programmes at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala.

“We ask for your prayers and Holy Masses for his eternal peace. May Fr. Tobias dwell in Paradise forever. May God provide comfort to those he has left behind. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” Rev. Fr. Ezeogu concluded.

The tragic loss has left the Catholic community and residents of Anambra State in shock. Authorities are yet to identify or apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous act.
