Troops uncover massive ISWAP underground armoury in Sambisa forest

Troops of the 21 Armoured Brigade, Operation Hadin Kai, have made a significant discovery in the Sambisa forest, Borno State, unearthing a vast underground armoury belonging to the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP) insurgents.

During the ongoing counter-terrorism operation, codenamed Desert Sanity II, on May 13, 2023, the troops entered Ukuba camp in the outskirts of Bama Local Government Area. It was during this operation that they stumbled upon the massive cache of arms and ammunition.

According to a reliable source, the troops had previously raided the same camp and confiscated six anti-aircraft guns, four AK-47 rifles, materials used for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a stash of magazines, and a Hilux vehicle equipped with an anti-aircraft gun.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, revealed that the hidden dug pits, meticulously concealed by the terrorist group, served as storage for a substantial number of weapons.

Among the recovered items were various types of rocket-propelled grenade tubes, SMG rifles, double barrel guns, 50 hand grenades, and five SMK bombs.

Additionally, the troops discovered 183 Shilka rounds, materials for making IEDs, non-electric detonators, prepared IEDs, and several canister bombs.

During the withdrawal from the area, the troops encountered a lone terrorist whom they neutralized. They also confiscated an AK-47 rifle and other possessions from him.

After thoroughly clearing the vicinity, the troops successfully evacuated the arms from the scene. The outcome of the operations thus far has significantly bolstered the morale and fighting spirit of the troops.

Since its commencement on April 27, 2023, Operation Desert-Lake-Mountain II has been steadily advancing in the Sambisa-Timbuktu Triangle and the Lake Chad region.

The ground and air support have continued to apply pressure on the terrorists, resulting in the elimination of numerous insurgents and the forced retreat of others.

Noteworthy among the recently cleared terrorist hideouts are Garno, Alafa, Alafa D, Garin Doctor, Njumia, Izzah, Farisu, Somalia, Ukuba, Garin Glucose, Garin Ba’aba, and Bula Abu Amir.
