Trump dismisses upcoming sentencing in hush money case as ‘Illegitimate Political Attack’

US President-elect Donald Trump has criticized a judge’s decision to set a sentencing date in his hush money trial before his inauguration, calling it an “illegitimate political attack.”

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared, “This illegitimate political attack is nothing but a Rigged Charade,” in response to Judge Juan Merchan’s ruling earlier on January 4. Merchan upheld Trump’s conviction by a New York jury and set the sentencing date for January 10.

Legal experts had suggested that despite the possible sentence of up to four years in prison, it was unlikely that Judge Merchan would imprison the former president before the inauguration on January 20.

This development has added to the ongoing political tension surrounding Trump as he prepares for his return to office.
