Two Faces of Nigeria: Sowore vs. El-Rufai, by Ahmed Oluwasanjo
It’s no coincidence that fiery activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, and devious and cunning politician Nasir El-Rufai, share the same birthday.
After all, they say positive and negative energies drive the world. Sowore and El-Rufai’s shared birthday offers us a chance to choose who we see as our champion.
On one hand, you have a select few celebrating Sowore, an iconoclast committed to disrupting Nigeria’s political space to midwife rebirth of nation that works for all.
With Sahara Reporters, Sowore has written his name in the sand of time at 54. His courageous and rugged activism for over 30 years without corruption scandal speaks alot.
On the other hand, we see a large crowd celebrating El-Rufai, a figure in Nigeria’s predatory political class, one who has played a role in maintaining the status quo.
El-Rufai’s recent admission of the Kaduna Kidnapping Team— a gang of thugs sponsored by the state to abduct and torture critics and political opponents under his successor, Uba Sani— suggests who should be held accountable for the mysterious disappearance of Dadiyata. But that’s a story for another day.
Putting Sowore and El-Rufai side by side and analyzing their roles in the country, it should not be difficult to determine who truly deserves to be celebrated between the duo. However, the fact that the crowd chose Barabbas over Jesus Christ, saviour of the world, reminds us that what we experience today is nothing new.
My hope lies in knowing that, regardless of the majority’s choice, all things ultimately work together for the greater good.
