UN pledges support for Nigeria’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (Pictures)
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to help Nigeria meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Speaking at an event in Abuja marking the UN’s 79th anniversary, Fall emphasized Nigeria’s pivotal role in the global achievement of these goals, stating, “If Nigeria doesn’t achieve the SDGs, neither does the world.”
Fall, highlighted five critical areas in the UN’s “Pact for the Future,” which includes SDG financing, international peace and security, science and innovation, youth empowerment, and global governance.
“The Nigeria we want is reflected in this pact,” he said, stressing the importance of collective action among government bodies, civil society, and development partners.
Elsie Attafuah, UNDP Country Resident Representative, underscored that Nigeria’s development would focus heavily on technology, innovation, and digitalisation.
She announced the establishment of “university ports” across Nigerian universities to foster creativity and innovation.

These hubs will serve as spaces for young Nigerians to test their ideas, with the UNDP aiming to create 36 such centers over the next three years.
Additionally, Vaneessa Phala-Moyo, ILO Country Director, pledged to promote social justice in Nigeria through the country’s Decent Work Programme, developed in partnership with key labour organisations.
