UNILORIN 200-level student commits suicide over hardship
According to reports, a 200-level male student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), located in Kwara State, killed himself due to financial difficulties.
The deceased was a member of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), though their identity has not yet been verified.
Additionally, it was learned that prior to his untimely death, the student had a cumulative academic standing of 4.5 at the Department of Mass Communication.
It was later discovered that the incident took place at his private home in the state capital of Ilorin, at the Oke-Odo axis of Tanke community.
According to university community sources, the deceased’s financial difficulties led him to take his own life.
Additionally, it was discovered that the deceased’s mother, a retired schoolteacher, had assumed financial responsibility for his education after his father passed away a few years prior.
According to reports, the deceased’s financial difficulties began when he returned to school last year. His coworkers reportedly raised money as a result of the development to cover his tuition and purchase food for him.
However, it was discovered that the deceased took a poison last weekend, shortly after his roommate had left for lectures. He left a note for his roommate stating that he was unable to handle his financial situation, which was the reason he took his own life.
It was discovered that when they got back from lectures, his roommate had sounded the alarm about the incident.
On Tuesday, a senior administrative officer from the school administration confirmed the incident to reporters in Ilorin, requesting anonymity regarding the development.
He described the incident as shocking, saying that the development had thrown the university and students into a mourning mood.
