University of Ilorin mourns student who committed suicide over online loan crisis

The University of Ilorin’s management has offered condolences to the family of Miss Hameedat Sanni, a student who tragically took her own life in the midst of financial distress related to online transactions.

A statement issued by Mr. Kunle Akogun, the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, conveyed the profound sadness felt by the institution’s management over this unfortunate incident.

“It was a deeply distressing way for a promising young lady to meet her end, especially one who had the potential for a bright future ahead,” Akogun remarked.

The university’s management extended its heartfelt sympathy to the parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, praying that they find the strength to cope with their loss.

In light of the tragedy, the university administration also advised its students to exercise caution in their choice of companions to avoid falling victim to fraudulent individuals.

“The University of Ilorin is renowned for imparting both moral and academic education. We find it disheartening that one of our students, despite the moral and academic guidance provided, got involved with an undesirable character, who posed as a boyfriend, and tragically chose to end her own life,” the statement lamented.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the 20-year-old Sanni took her own life after lending a significant sum of N500,000 to an individual she had met on the social media platform Snapchat.

Sanni was in the midst of her SIWES program while residing in a private hostel, as reported by the hostel management. Her untimely demise was attributed to the mounting pressure from the app agents, who were relentlessly demanding repayment.

Adding to her distress, her brother’s financial inability to assist her aggravated the situation, leading her into a state of deep depression.
