The family of late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in bandits’ captivity in Katsina State, has rejected the explanation given by the state government regarding the circumstances of his death.

The Katsina State Government had earlier suggested that the retired senior officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension. However, the family insists this account is inaccurate and not supported by his medical history.

Speaking in an interview with Deutsche Welle Hausa, the deceased’s son, Isyaka Abubakar, said the family does not accept the claim, stressing that his father had no known history of diabetes or high blood pressure.

“Our father was not diabetic and did not suffer from hypertension. People have different opinions about what happened,” he said.

Isyaka added that the family believes other possibilities cannot be ruled out, including the chance of a snakebite or other injuries sustained during captivity. He also pointed to reports of swelling seen on the deceased’s leg in circulated footage, though he noted that the exact cause of death has not been independently verified.

The family further stated that it was not fully informed about how the remains were recovered, saying that questions surrounding the process should be directed to the relevant authorities handling the case.

He also dismissed social media claims that his mother, who was abducted alongside the retired general, had been released, insisting she is still being held by the kidnappers.

“As I speak, she is still with them,” he said.

The retired general and his wife were kidnapped in Katsina State in May while travelling. He later died in captivity, a development confirmed by military authorities.

The incident has renewed public concern over rising insecurity in the region and the fate of other abducted victims still in the hands of armed groups.
