US attack in North West Nigeria had federal approval – Defence Headquarters

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the recent United States airstrike carried out in parts of North West Nigeria was conducted with full approval from the Federal Government.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the operation was a joint effort between the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the United States, targeting foreign Islamic State (ISIS) elements operating in the region.
According to the DHQ, the precision strike was based on credible intelligence and formed part of ongoing coordinated efforts to degrade terrorist networks and prevent the expansion of transnational extremist groups within Nigeria’s borders.

Major General Uba emphasized that the operation followed due process and was executed in line with established rules of engagement, with particular attention paid to minimizing civilian casualties and protecting critical infrastructure.
“The joint operation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to working with strategic international partners to address evolving security threats, especially those posed by foreign terrorist fighters,” the statement said.
The Defence Headquarters also reassured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain fully in control of all military operations within the country and will continue to collaborate with allies where necessary to enhance national security.

The confirmation comes amid public discussions following reports of U.S. military involvement in counter-terrorism operations in northern Nigeria. Authorities reiterated that such cooperation is aimed solely at restoring peace and stability in affected communities.
The military pledged to sustain intelligence-driven operations to dismantle terrorist cells and safeguard lives and property across the country.
