Valentine’s Day, marked every February 14, is traditionally a celebration of love, affection and togetherness. Across Nigeria and many parts of the world, the day is observed with the exchange of gifts, romantic outings and social gatherings. However, the festivities increasingly come with security concerns that call for caution and responsible celebration.
A Rise in Criminal Activities
In recent years, Valentine’s Day has coincided with a rise in criminal activities in Nigeria and beyond. Law enforcement agencies and security experts note that the period often records cases of ritual killings, abductions, rape, armed robbery and road accidents.
Internationally, similar trends have been observed, with reports of gun violence, incidents of drinking and driving and sexual assaults during Valentine-related celebrations.
In Nigeria, the season has been particularly linked to ritual-related crimes, as desperate individuals exploit the symbolism of love to lure unsuspecting victims. Young women have, in some cases, fallen prey to abduction or sexual assault after accepting invitations from strangers or acquaintances promising extravagant dates or gifts.
Hotels, short-let apartments and nightclubs, which experience increased patronage during the period, have also featured in reports of rape, theft and violent altercations.

Road safety remains another major concern. Increased travel, nighttime movements and alcohol/drug consumption have contributed to fatal accidents on highways during Valentine’s celebrations.
Abroad, authorities in some countries similarly issue security advisories, citing heightened risks of gun violence, domestic disputes and traffic accidents linked to excessive revelry.
Meaningful Celebration with Safety
Despite these challenges, Valentine’s Day can still be celebrated meaningfully and safely. Security-conscious celebration begins with choosing public, well-lit and familiar locations rather than secluded spots.
Informing trusted friends or family members of one’s plans and movements, especially for first-time meetings, is strongly advised.
Experts also warn against trusting strangers too quickly, particularly those met online.
Social Media Exploitation

Criminals are known to exploit social media and dating platforms during festive periods, making caution essential. Accepting expensive gifts or private invitations without proper verification may expose individuals to danger.
Moderation is key to staying safe. Avoiding excessive alcohol intake reduces the risk of accidents, violence and poor judgment. Motorists are urged to observe traffic rules, avoid driving under the influence and minimise night journeys where possible.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to engage young people in conversations about personal safety, consent and peer pressure during the season. Meanwhile, increased police patrols around entertainment centres and major roads should be supported through public cooperation.
Ultimately, Valentine’s Day should reflect love in its truest form — care, respect and responsibility. In a time of growing security concerns, celebrating with caution is not a limitation but a wise choice. After all, protecting life and dignity remains the greatest expression of love.
