WAEC withholds over 200,000 results due to examination malpractice

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has made a startling revelation, stating that the results of 262,803 candidates who took the examination are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice.

During a press briefing on Monday, Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Head of Nigeria Office, announced the release of the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for School Candidates in Nigeria. He emphasized that the withheld results accounted for 16.29% of the total 1,613,733 candidates who sat for the examination.

Areghan explained, “The results of 262,803 candidates, representing 16.29% of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice. This figure is 6.54% lower than the 22.83% recorded in the WASSCE for School Candidates in 2022.”

He further shed light on the reasons behind this alarming situation. Candidates’ lack of readiness to study, low self-confidence, and inadequate preparations for the examinations were identified as contributing factors. Areghan pointed out the prevalent over-reliance on “Expo,” which deceives students with false information. When the candidates arrived at the examination halls and discovered the truth, their disappointment and frustration were palpable.

At the time of the press briefing, approved results were currently being uploaded.

Areghan stated that the exam spanned seven weeks, from May 8 to June 23, 2023.
