We were not tortured or starved in detention – Released #EndBadGovernance protesters

Protesters freed after the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance demonstration in Kaduna have refuted claims of being tortured while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The group, primarily disc jockeys (DJs) who provided music at the protest, told journalists they were treated well during their detention.
Following a case review by the new DSS Director General, they were released in October 2024.

Dahiru Hamza, known as DJ Zariya from Tudun Wada, recounted, “I was arrested on 8 August 2024. We were detained but not tortured or starved. Our release was unconditional, and we were instructed to collect our sound equipment,” he said.
Hamza mentioned that misleading claims by protest organisers about having security clearance led to his arrest. He appealed to the government to prioritise job creation for Nigerian youths.
DJ SP (Isa Abdullahi) confirmed he faced no mistreatment and was allowed regular contact with his wife during detention. He expressed gratitude for the DSS Director General’s fair approach.
Khaleed, the protest coordinator who hired the DJs, was also released, with all charges dropped. He has since reunited with his family.
