Wedding ends in tragedy as bride allegedly poisons guests, groom hospitalised
A wedding in Jigawa State turned into a nightmare after a bride allegedly poisoned the food served at the reception, leading to the hospitalisation of the groom and the tragic death of one wedding guest.
The shocking incident occurred in the Jahun Local Government Area of the state, sparking widespread disbelief and concern.
Eyewitnesses have speculated that the bride’s actions may have been motivated by a personal vendetta, though this has not been confirmed by the authorities. The tragic turn of events unfolded during a wedding reception that was meant to be a joyous occasion, with guests gathered to celebrate the union of the couple.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, confirmed the details of the incident in an interview with PUNCH Online on Friday. According to Adam, the bride allegedly tainted the food served to guests, leaving the groom critically ill.
“The police received a report that the bride had tainted the food served at the wedding reception, resulting in the groom falling critically ill. Tragically, one of the wedding guests passed away from the effects of the poisoned food,” Adam said.

In response to the crime, the police swiftly arrested two individuals in connection with the poisoning. The suspects include the bride and another female individual, both of whom are now in police custody. Investigations are being led by the Criminal Investigation Department of the command, with the police spokesperson assuring the public that justice would be pursued to the fullest extent.
Adam also provided an update on the condition of other victims of the food poisoning. While all wedding guests who consumed the contaminated food have been discharged from the hospital, one person remains deceased. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased, the groom, or the other affected individuals, pending further investigations.
“We are working tirelessly to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Our investigators are focused on unraveling the facts, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served,” said the police spokesperson. He also urged the public to remain calm as authorities continue to handle the case with the utmost seriousness.
As the investigation unfolds, many in the local community are grappling with the shocking nature of the crime. The wedding, which was supposed to symbolize a joyous beginning, has instead ended in tragedy, with both the groom’s family and the entire community left in shock.
