Wike suspends FCT education secretary for
unauthorised closure of schools

Story by Mercy Adaje

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has indefinitely suspended the Mandate Secretary of Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, for issuing an unauthorised directive for the closure of schools across the territory.

Speaking during an inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects in Guzape II (A11 District), Wike said the decision was taken without his knowledge or approval. He added that other senior officials involved in producing the circular would also face disciplinary measures.

Wike explained that he was shocked to learn of the directive while watching the news, noting that an investigation revealed it had already been circulated to schools despite no security threat warranting such action.

He criticised the decision, saying it gave the false impression that Abuja was unsafe for schooling, especially when neighbouring states like Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Kogi had not shut down their institutions.

Assuring residents that schools remain safe, Wike vowed that all those responsible would be sanctioned in line with civil service rules.

He also addressed ongoing development projects in Guzape and Maitama II, emphasising his administration’s commitment to completing long-abandoned contracts to enhance infrastructure and enable landowners to develop their properties.
