WWC: Japan beat Norway 3-1, cruises to Q/Finals 

 

Japan has qualified for the Quarter Finals in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup after beating Norway 3-1 on Saturday morning.

The Asian women’s football power house got on early with the lead after an own goal by Norway’s Ingrid Syrstad Engen in the 15th minute of the game to put Japan in the lead.

Norway reduced the tally five minutes later after winger, Guro Reiten found the back of the net to make it 1-1. Both teams were able to maintain the scoreline till the end of the first half.

Japan who were formidable in their group stage reclaimed the lead in the 50th minutes courtesy, Risa Shimizu to make it 2-1 against the rather sluggish Norwegians who could not make any impact on goal.

Japan who were rather composed took advantage of the European country who lacked coordination in their defence as Hinata Miyazawa sealed the victory in the 81st minute to make it 3-1.

Japan victory was not a surprise after they came out tops in their group with nine points beating flopped African country, Zambia 5-0, Costa Rica 2-0 and a resounding 4-0 trashing on Spain.

Elsewhere, Spain booked their quarter finals ticket after decimating Switzerland 5-1 in the first round of 16 match played earlier in the day.

Attention will be shifted to one of Africa’s representatives, South Africa as they play Netherlands on Sunday, while Sweden and the United States of America go battle for the reminder tomorrow.

South Africa are expected to put up a great performance after beating Italy 3-2, drew with Argentina 2-2 and claimed a 2-1 victory over Sweden in their first group game.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will have a date with the Lionesses of England on Monday morning as the team’s supporters are banking on the likes of Asisat Oshoala and Tony Payne.
