The College of Agriculture Gujba and a corp member, Pamela Otu (YB/19A/0538) yesterday in Damaturu organised awareness campaign to sensitise public on the menace, symptoms and precautions of Lassa Fever.

The Provost of the college Malam Alkali Usman, stated at the occasion that “This event is organised to raise the awareness level of the public in the phase of an outbreak of highly fatal haemorrhagic disease, Lassa fever.

“Although no single case has so far been reported in Yobe state it is pertinent to note that we shared border and also interact with the affected states for one reason or the other.

“Therefore, this makes us vulnerable and the need to appreciate this event is very high.”, Usman said.

He noted that “Studies have shown that the reservoir for this menace is rats that often secrete the virus via their urine leading to the contamination of our foods, clothes and beddings.

“The risk is also high when having contact with an infected person,” he added.

On her part, Otu, the corp member that initiated the campaign stated that what prompted her decision to organise the campaign was the increasing number of cases in the neighboring states.

“I believed that precaution is better than cure and the containment of an outbreak is a collective responsibility. This informed my decision to contribute my quota by way of organizing this event,” she said.
