Yobe gov’t rolls out statewide market project to revive economy

In an impressive sign of recovery from the shadows of conflict, the Yobe State Government is launching a network of modern markets across its territory, aiming to jumpstart local economies and restore livelihoods decimated by the Boko Haram insurgency.
A media tour organised by the state government highlighted how strategic infrastructure investment is being used to stimulate commerce, create jobs, and foster stability in communities once crippled by violence.
Leading the tour, Yobe State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, stated that the markets represent the core of the state’s recovery plan.

“We are deliberately bringing tangible, people-oriented projects to every local government area, from the most rural village to the urban centre, it’s about creating real opportunities where hope was once lost,” said Bego.
The tour focused on the newly completed Yunusari Modern Market, presented as a model for the state’s new commercial hubs.
The expansive complex is a significant upgrade from traditional marketplaces, featuring 96 lock-up shops, 146 open stalls, 46 stores and warehouses, dedicated meat shops, an administrative block, a police station, a fire service station, and a banking hall all designed to provide security, convenience, and a formalised trading environment.

Arc. Ahmed Buba, Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, explained that Yunusari is just one node in a wider, strategic network.
“Our goal is to reactivate the entire state’s commercial ecosystem. We have constructed and modernised key markets in Damaturu, Potiskum, Gashua, Nguru, Ngalda, Buni- Yadi, Yunusari and Geidam to ensure no community is left behind.”
Local community members like Baba Goni Aisami and Sabo Saleh described the market as “a beacon for our future.”
They believe it will not only serve local needs but also attract external trade and investment, acting as a catalyst for sustained regional growth.
