Yobe State government has vowed to overcome the challenges of water supply and sanitation facing the state.
The Commissioner Ministry of Water Resources, Alkali Jajere represented by the Permanent Secretary, Galtima Mai Ali assured at the ongoing ministerial press briefing to mark the second anniversary of Governor Mai Mala Buni in office that
the current administration is working round the clock to ensure that the challenge is eliminated.
Ali speaking of the laurels explained that the Ministry has experienced massive growth since its inception.
He said, “It may interest you to know that during the period under review, May 2019 date the Ministry of Water Resources has drilled five (5) No boreholes at Wagir, Nigeria Army Headquarters Buni Gari, State Abbatoir e.t.c amounting to the sum of N 116,264,098.00”.
“Similarly; During the same period, the present administration under the leadership of His Excellency Hon Mai Mala Buni. Intimated the Federal government through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources Abuja for possible completion of the project.
“The federal government approved the sum of N 8.4 Billion Naira only in Apri 2021 for the completion, and contractors have since mobilized to site in the following manner, Wellfield A-Malammatari, Wellfield B-Nayi Nawa off Potiskum Road, Wellfield C-Sumsumma”.
According to him, the project has a tenure of 24 months commencing April 2021, this project when completed will produce and distribute about 6.5 million litres per day. “In the same vein; The Yobe State Water Corporation is responsible for operation and maintenance of urban boreholes in 20 area office across the state, currently we operate and maintain about 310 urban boreholes”.
“During the period under review 10 no replacement boreholes were drilled and two (2) new boreholes, replacement of aged generators at Potiskum, Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Buni Gari and about 30km of pipeline reticulation”.
He added that “Damaturu, Potiskum, Geidam, and also procurement of various capacity of submersible pumps for immediate replacement in urban areas across the state. Accordingly, the sum of about one (1) Billion Naira was expended during the period”.
“Furthermore; the Rural water supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) is responsible for maintenance of rural boreholes across the state during the period under review; the Agency rehabilitated, converted and upgraded over 70 no boreholes drilled 7 new boreholes to which the sum of 102,000,000-00 was expended the agency implemented sanitation across the state”.
“Hygiene and water in Nigeria SHAWN, the project was implemented in Machina, Nangere, Jakusko, Fika, Gujba and Yunusari Local government area where 232 Hand pump boreholes, 53 solar boreholes and 128 latrines were provided. The state government contributed the sum of N112,000,000.00 as counterpart contribution to the project”.
