Yobe to sensitize public on dangers of open defecation

The Yobe State Commissioner Ministry of Water Resources, Senator Alkali Abdulkadir Jajere said the ministry will soon embark on sensitization of 60, 000 households across the state on the dangers of open defecation for a disease-free society.

The Commissioner stated this during the distribution of livelihood support items to IDPs returnee in Gujba, Gulani, Geidam and Yunusari as well as communities affected by desertification in Karasuwa and Yunusari.

Alkali Jajere said, following a partnership between Yobe State Government and African Development Bank (AFDB) on the provision of water and sanitation facilities in the rural areas of the state, nearly 2000 water points have been provided to over 1000 communities, supplying water to about two million people and many animals.

The commissioner said, “Under the provision of sanitation facilities in schools and public places, 260 schools and 75 rural markets are being provided with 1, 300 and 740 compartments of VIP latrines respectively. This will serve over 80, 000 people in schools and rural markets.”

Senator Alkali Jajere disclosed that they have recorded success under the AFDB supported programme and contributions coming from other partners in the state, there is the need for more funds for the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities in the rural areas of the state.

“Many rural communities in Gulani, Gujba, Tarmuwa, Geidam, Fune and Fika local government areas are without a good source of water,” Jajere added.
