Zulum launches relief distribution for Borno flood victims

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has inaugurated the distribution of relief materials to those affected by the severe flooding in Maiduguri.

The disaster, caused by the overflow of Alau Dam, has displaced nearly 2 million people across the Maiduguri Metropolis and surrounding areas, with many seeking refuge in approximately 36 camps.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Monday at Bakasi Camp along Damboa Road in Maiduguri.

The relief materials distributed include a 25kg bag of rice, a carton of pasta, and ₦10,000 in cash.

Briefing journalists, Zulum expressed concern that many people not affected by the flood are flocking to the IDP camps, complicating the distribution efforts.

“We have observed that it is no longer sustainable to continue accepting people in the camps because many who were not affected are coming in,” he said.

In addition to distributing relief materials, the governor announced plans to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the affected areas to guide future interventions.

“We have mobilized resources to ensure that each affected victim receives relief items. We have also made arrangements to assess the communities to verify the actual number of those affected,” the governor stated.

Additionally, Zubaida Umar, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), outlined her agency’s efforts to assist victims of the flood disaster.
