2 Nigerians win £50,000 Peace Prize
James Wuye and Muhammad Ashafa, two Nigerians and co-founders of the Interfaith Mediation Centre, have been named the inaugural recipients of the Commonwealth Peace Prize.
The award recognizes their remarkable efforts in “peacebuilding and reconciliation” within Nigeria.
Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, made the announcement on Wednesday in a letter addressed to Nigeria’s Deputy High Commissioner, Sani Suleiman. In her letter, Scotland highlighted the impressive work of Wuye and Ashafa, noting that their contributions have set a global standard for peacebuilding and reconciliation.
Scotland also commended their dedication to bridging religious divides, promoting mutual understanding, and preventing violent conflict, stating that their work has had a profound impact. She expressed confidence that their efforts would inspire future generations of peacebuilders.
The letter further stated, “As distinguished practitioners, we are confident they will serve as role models for future generations of aspiring peacebuilders.”
The Commonwealth Peace Prize, which was launched on September 21, 2024, aims to honor individuals who make significant contributions to global peace. The award will be officially presented on March 10, 2025, during a special ceremony for Commonwealth Day at Marlborough House in London. The recipients will receive the award along with a financial prize of £50,000 to support their ongoing work.
