Dr Salamat Ahuoiza Aliu is Nigeria’s first female neurosurgeon.
She was indigenously trained and also became the first female to be certified as a neurosurgeon in the whole of West Africa.
Born in Ilorin, Kwara State (1980), she attended medical school at the University of Ilorin to get her first degree. She trained and specialized in neurosurgery in Usman Danfodiyo University under Prof BB Shehu.
Salamat is an Ebira woman from Okene Local Government in Kogi State. She is happily married with two children and presently works at the National Hospital in Abuja.
Noted for her exceptional work in neurosurgery and encouragement of women to join the neurological field, Aliu was listed in the top 100 persons of the year by Arewa socio-political group in 2016.
Neurosurgeons are not just brain surgeons, they are medically trained neurosurgical specialists who can also help patients suffering from back and neck pain as well as a host of other illnesses ranging from trigeminal neuralgia to head injury and Parkinson’s disease.
