Borno Govt, WHO launch vaccination campaign to protect children against polio

The Borno State Government, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), has launched a large-scale vaccination campaign aimed at protecting over 2 million children residing in the state’s 27 local government areas.
Over the course of 10 days, this ambitious campaign will provide fractional doses of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (fIPV) and novel oral poliomyelitis (polio) vaccine type-2 (nOPV) to ensure the health and well-being of children in the region.

During the campaign’s inauguration in Maiduguri, Prof. Baba Gana, the commissioner for health and human services, highlighted the strategic placement of vaccination teams in key locations such as schools, markets, orphanage homes, and motor parks. By reaching out to these areas, the government aims to include every eligible child between the ages of 0 and 59 months.
Prof. Baba Gana also emphasized the pivotal role of traditional and religious leaders in achieving the campaign’s goals. Their support and cooperation are crucial in ensuring the successful implementation and coverage of this extensive vaccination initiative. He expressed deep gratitude to the partners for their unwavering support throughout the endeavor.
Dr. Moisule Ganga, the acting state coordinator of WHO in Borno, echoed these sentiments and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to assisting the state government in immunizing eligible children, even in hard-to-reach areas. With the comprehensive nature of the campaign, it is capable of eradicating any potential viruses, including the wild poliovirus. Dr. Ganga expressed optimism, stating that the campaign will surpass its target by achieving more than 100% coverage.
Appreciating the state government’s dedication in providing essential health services, Dr. Ganga assured that WHO would align its efforts with the state’s objectives. Through the collaboration between the Borno State Government and WHO, the campaign aims to effectively protect the region’s children against preventable diseases, paving the way for a healthier future for the younger population.
