Police arrest housewife, partner over fake kidnapping

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a housewife and her alleged accomplice over a fake kidnapping scheme designed to extort money from her family.

According to the police, the suspects, Mrs. Funke Adeyemi (the housewife) and Mr. Sadiq Lawal (the accomplice), were apprehended following investigations that uncovered inconsistencies in the reported abduction. Detectives said the woman was never kidnapped but conspired with Lawal to stage the incident and demand ransom.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the case came to light after intelligence-led inquiries traced the ransom communication and movements of the suspects. He added that preliminary findings indicate the pair planned the hoax to settle personal financial obligations.

Recovered items include mobile phones used for ransom calls and SIM cards allegedly linked to the scheme. The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, warned against false kidnapping reports, noting that such acts divert security resources and undermine public safety. He urged residents to report suspicious activities promptly and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
