A California man accused of launching a gun attack at a high-profile press dinner attended by U.S. President Donald Trump is set to appear in court today, following a dramatic incident that has heightened concerns over political violence in the United States.
Officials said the suspect allegedly attempted to target Trump and senior government figures during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner held at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.
According to authorities, the attacker was intercepted after trying to breach security one floor above the main ballroom where the event was taking place. A brief exchange of gunfire with security operatives ensued before he was subdued and arrested at the scene.
Trump, who was swiftly evacuated by security agents, later shared images on his Truth Social account showing the suspect handcuffed and lying face down on the hotel floor.
Speaking in an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump downplayed fears during the chaotic moments. “I wasn’t worried. I understand life. We live in a crazy world,” he said.
Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that the suspect is not cooperating with investigators but is expected to face formal federal charges in Washington.
“We do believe… that he was targeting members of the administration,” Blanche said, noting that investigations into the motive remain ongoing.
Authorities revealed that the suspect was heavily armed, allegedly carrying a shotgun, handgun, and knives, and had been staying at the same hotel hosting the event.
The shooting triggered panic inside the ballroom as Secret Service agents rushed in, prompting guests—including top government officials, lawmakers, and media figures—to take cover under tables.
Among those present were First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, alongside cabinet members and hundreds of attendees.
Trump later suggested the attacker acted alone, describing him as a “lone wolf,” while also alleging—without providing evidence—that the suspect had written an “anti-Christian” manifesto.
One security officer was reportedly shot at close range but survived after the bullet struck a protective vest.
The incident adds to a string of assassination attempts targeting Trump, including a 2024 rally shooting in Butler and another security breach at his golf course in West Palm Beach.
Notably, the Washington Hilton has historical significance as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
The annual dinner, organised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, typically brings together journalists, political leaders, and dignitaries to celebrate press freedom and raise funds for scholarships.
The attack occurred just days before the planned state visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to Washington, adding to security concerns surrounding the high-profile diplomatic engagement.
